Do we have to allow the things we are afraid of to control our lives?

A number of the stories we tell during the advent season seem to feature the sudden appearance of angels, who always open with the line “Do not be afraid!” This week Paul is wondering whether they might have been getting at something a little deeper than not having a phobia of the sudden appearance of angels…?
